Cookie policy

Pencil uses very few cookies, and only to keep you signed in. Here is every one of them.

01What cookies are

Small files your browser keeps so a site remembers you between visits.

Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Local and session storage work in a similar way and stay on your device. This policy covers all three.

02Cookies we use

Only the sign-in cookies set by Clerk, our account provider.

These are needed for Pencil to work, so they can’t be switched off inside Pencil.

__sessionProves you’re signed in on each requestAbout a minute, renewed while you use Pencil
__clientKeeps you signed in between visits (on Clerk’s sign-in domain)Until you sign out or your session ends
__client_uatNotes when you last signed in or out, so Pencil knows whether to checkUp to a year
__clerk_handshake, __clerk_redirect_countHand your sign-in safely between Clerk and PencilA few seconds, while signing in

03Browser storage

A few small notes Pencil keeps on your device.

These never leave your browser and hold nothing about who you are.

pencil.ai.model.v2Remembers the AI model you picked (local storage)Until you clear it
pencil.draftsTracks pages Pencil opened for a request, so ones left empty are cleaned up (session storage)Until you close the tab
pencil:page-loaderKeeps the loading screen up while you sign in (session storage)About ten seconds

04What we don’t use

No advertising, analytics or cross-site tracking cookies.

We don’t use advertising, analytics, social media or cross-site tracking cookies, and we don’t let other companies set cookies through Pencil. That’s why there is no cookie banner.

05Public pages

People reading a public page are not tracked.

Someone opening a page you made public may get __client_uat, which only records that they aren’t signed in. Nothing else is set unless they sign in to their own account.

06Managing cookies

You can clear or block cookies in your browser at any time.

Every browser lets you see, delete and block cookies in its settings. If you block the sign-in cookies, you won’t be able to stay signed in to Pencil.

Signing out of Pencil removes the sign-in cookies straight away.

07Changes and contact

If we ever add a new cookie, this list changes first.

We will update this page, and the date at the top, before we start using any new cookie. If it isn’t essential, we will ask you first.
